Hello, my name is Emmitt Parkman.

Welcome to Fork and Soul!

Fork & Soul is about bringing the community together with good food that we can share with our fellow neighbors. The power of food is not only good for the body but, good for the soul.

My love of cooking was shaped by the women in my life growing up in New Orleans, Central Mississippi and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. On Sunday’s listening to my grandmother hums spiritual hymns while creating her cast iron skillet cornbread and banana pudding with meringue topping served during Sunday dinner or my mothers biscuits, collard greens, red beans and rice, and a plethora of cakes served on numerous holidays throughout the year. Watching, learning and cooking by their side throughout my childhood is what shaped me into the cook I am today.

As I have continued to grow, my cooking style is a little different than what I grew up eating. Comfort food makes us all warm and cozy inside and it feels like the food hugs us and makes us feel loved. I’d like to call my cooking style clean comfort food using locally sourced ingredients and cooking with few preservatives so you don’t have to feel guilty when eating some of your favorite pleasures. Overall everything in moderation.

Hopefully you’ll follow along on this journey with me as I continue to tell my story through food and my privilege of culinary experiences over the years. Pull up a chair and grab a slice of pound cake or egg custard pie and pour yourself a hot cup of chicory and lets have a good ole time in the kitchen.
