The Norumbega (Camden, ME)

There's something utterly enchanting about discovering a castle nestled in the quiet corners of coastal Maine. The Norumbega Inn, locally known as the "Castle by the Sea," stands as a Victorian-era marvel in Camden, its stone facade and turrets rising above manicured grounds like something from a fairytale.

As I wound my way up the circular drive on a crisp winter evening, the warm glow from the inn's windows promised the cozy retreat I’d been craving. The historic mansion, built in 1886, commands attention with its distinctive stone architecture and Queen Anne-style details, but it's the warmth within that truly captures the heart.

A Room Fit for Royalty

My fourth-floor chamber, the Penthouse, offered sweeping views of Penobscot Bay through its original bay windows. Period furnishings, including a magnificent king sized be with luxurious linens, transported me to a more gracious era. Yet modern amenities – plush robes, a rain shower, and perfectly regulated heating soaking tub – ensured my complete comfort.

Breakfast: A Culinary Adventure

The Norumbega's reputation as a culinary destination is well-earned.  Each morning brought new delights: one day, it was classic eggs benedict with perfectly poached eggs and house-made hollandaise; the next, fresh-baked orange-cranberry scones followed by a French toast with topped with local warm Maine maple syrup and wild Maine blueberry compote.

Afternoon Pleasures

The inn's library became our favorite afternoon retreat. Settling into a leather wingback chair beside the original stone fireplace, watching boats dot the harbor while sipping complimentary port and nibbling on fresh-baked cookies – these moments felt lifted from a novel. The carefully curated book collection offered everything from Maine maritime history to contemporary fiction, perfect for losing oneself on a lazy afternoon.

Beyond the Castle Walls

While the Norumbega itself is a destination, its location in Camden provides easy access to the town's charming downtown. We strolled through the historic harbor district, popping into independent bookstores coffeehouses and boutiques. Whether you're interested in sailing, hiking, or simply taking in the stunning views from Mount Battie, there's something for everyone in Camden.

Evening Magic

As dusk settled each evening, the inn took on a magical quality. Soft lighting illuminated the intricate woodwork and stained glass windows.  The genuine warmth, encouraged by the intimate setting, added a special dimension to my stay.

The Little Details

What sets the Norumbega apart are the thoughtful touches: fresh flowers in every room, homemade chocolates at turndown, a curated selection of local teas, and staff who seem to anticipate needs before they arise. The inn strikes that perfect balance between luxury and comfort, grandeur and intimacy.

A Bittersweet Departure

Leaving the Norumbega felt like departing from a friend's home rather than a hotel. As I took one last look at the castle's distinctive silhouette against the morning sky, I was already planning my return. Some places are simply too special to visit just once.

Whether you're seeking a romantic getaway, a culinary adventure, or simply a unique escape from the ordinary, the Norumbega offers an experience that lingers in memory long after departure. In a world of cookie-cutter accommodations, this magnificent castle by the sea stands apart as a reminder that some of the most magical stays are found in places where history, luxury, and genuine hospitality converge.
