Anxiety is a common experience for many people, but for those who suffer from anxiety attacks, it can be an overwhelming and frightening experience. Six years ago, was my first encounter with an anxiety panic attack. My heart rate was extremely high that resulted in a visit to the emergency room. After visiting with my doctor, she gave me so much needed information on anxiety and how to cope.

An anxiety attack, also known as a panic attack, is a sudden episode of intense fear or discomfort that can cause a range of physical and emotional symptoms. In this blog post, we will explore what an anxiety attack is, the symptoms, and how to manage them.

What is an anxiety attack?

An anxiety attack is an intense episode of fear, panic, or anxiety that can come on suddenly and without warning. It's a feeling of overwhelming dread that can be triggered by a specific situation or can occur out of the blue.

Anxiety attacks can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, and can be accompanied by a range of physical symptoms.

Symptoms of an anxiety attack

The symptoms of an anxiety attack can be both physical and emotional. Physical symptoms can include:

  • Rapid heartbeat

  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

  • Sweating

  • Trembling or shaking

  • Nausea or stomach upset

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

  • Chest pain or discomfort

Emotional symptoms can include:

  • Fear or terror

  • Feeling of impending doom or danger

  • Feeling disconnected from reality

  • A sense of unreality or detachment

  • Feeling like you are losing control or going crazy

Managing an anxiety attack

If you experience an anxiety attack, there are several things you can do to manage it. The first step is to recognize that what you are experiencing is an anxiety attack and not a physical emergency. Remind yourself that the symptoms will pass and that you are safe.

Here are some tips for managing an anxiety attack:

  1. Practice deep breathing: Slowly breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. Focus on your breath and try to slow it down.

  2. Use positive self-talk: Remind yourself that the symptoms are temporary and that you have the ability to manage them.

  3. Use grounding techniques: Focus on your senses and surroundings. Notice the colors, sounds, and textures around you.

  4. Move your body: Take a walk, stretch, or engage in light exercise. Physical activity can help reduce anxiety.

  5. Seek support: Reach out to a trusted friend, family member, or mental health professional for support.

In conclusion, anxiety attacks can be a frightening experience, but they are manageable with the right tools and support. If you are experiencing anxiety attacks, know that you are not alone and that help is available. Remember to practice self-care and seek medical support when you need it.

One major factor that has helped me deal with anxiety as well as my overall mental health is herbal tea. Harney and Son’s offers a wide variety of teas that calm and soothe the body. Part of my weekly rotation, is the hemp tea collection that has six different teas for different moods for you to drink throughout the day and night to help you reach your comfort zone. In today’s stressful climate, practicing self care can be challenging. Remember that everything will be ok, having anxiety is nothing to be ashamed of. Having a peace of mind is something we should all strive for.
